Creating an accessible curriculum

Including students with mental health disabilities

Mental illness, depending on its severity, may have little or no impact on the student's learning, as medication can be very effective and students will have frequently developed strategies to cope with their disability.

Medication, may, however cause undesirable side effects such as drowsiness and disorientation.

Examination facilities

Some of the following accommodations may be appropriate:

  • provision of time extensions in examinations
  • provision of rest periods- some students may require a break(s) during the examination
  • provision of flexible time arrangements in examinations including split sessions on the same or successive days
  • provision of an alternative task or assignment rather than a set examination
