The education system has been designed for the needs of the “traditional learner” and does not take account of the needs of people who learn differently, e.g. a blind student will not learn through a visual medium only and will require the information to be presented in different accessible formats. In order for learning to take place it is essential that academic staff identify the different demands of their course and the skills required to by the student to carry out the tasks and gain mastery of those skills.
It is important to observe how the individual student with a disability engages with the learning tasks that make up their course, as it is these activities that will present the student with obstacles and difficulties. This will enable you to understand the impact of the student's disability and how it is affecting their capacity to engage with activities of the course. You will also be in a better position to identify how to support and accommodate the student throughout the duration of the course.
The task indicated above is to carry out a good practice audit to see how accessible your department is to students with disabilities. Click on the link above (?) to access the Word Doc and print it. Once the data has been collected feed back your results to the groups by using the 'Good Practice Audit' section on the discussion board.
