Disability - understanding the issues

Communication

Good communication is a key requirement in overcoming any difficulties that may arise. The best source of information about disability is the person with the disability. A full and frank discussion of any issues is essential if difficulties are to be satisfactorily resolved.

If you are not sure how something will affect the person, ask him/her for advice.

People with disabilities should be recognised as experts in their own lives.

The main categories of disability, which are likely to be encountered in third level education, are:

  1. Blindness and visual impairment
  2. Physical disability
  3. Specific learning difficulty (Dyslexia, Dyspraxia)
  4. Deafness and hearing impairment
  5. Mental health disability
