Legislation and disability

The Universities Act 1997

The Universities Act 1997 deals predominantly with issues relating to the running and governing of universities. In relation to equality, the Act requires that all institutions prepare a statement of the university policy in respect of:

‘Access to university and to university education by economically or socially disadvantaged people and by people with a disability and by people from sections of society significantly underrepresented in the student body'.

Two of the most significant pieces of legislation to be enacted in recent years are the Employment Equality Act 1998 and the Equal Status Act 2000. These Acts, in particular have significant implications for both providers and recipients of education.

In 2002 there was a 69% rise in people referring claims of discrimination under the EEA on the grounds of disability. In the same year, there was a 178% increase in claims on the grounds of disability under the Equal Status Act. (ODEI, The Equality tribunal)
