Legislation and disability

Recent Developments in Legislation

The Report of the Higher Education Authority on Access and Participant of Students with Disabilities in Higher Education defines disability as follows:

‘A student is disabled if he or she requires a provision which is outside of the mainstream provision of the college concerned'.

The landscape of third level education in Ireland indicates that disability causes an educational gap. Current legislation ensures that students with disabilities are not given additional advantages over other students. One of the aims of legislation is level the educational playing field so that students with disabilities have the same access to higher education as other students.

Students with disabilities have to reach the same educational standard as other students.
