Effective learning

Students often ask how much time they should spend studying and, the answer? There is no golden rule. Courses differ in their demands and students in their abilities, therefore it is difficult to offer a standard answer however, it is conventional to suggest at least two hours private study time for each hour of formal lectures. Try some of the tasks below and assess your success:

  • to maximise concentration, study in blocks of 40-50 minutes.
  • specify at least one study question per 40 minute block.
  • after your study period (i.e. 2 hours) review your information
  • use any spare time to revisit the information learned i.e. on the bus the next morning or while having a cup of coffee.
