It’s up to you how and when to disclose. However, it’s very important that you take time prepare yourself beforehand, so that you are in control of the process. The following questions will help you to decide whether or not you need to disclose your disability:
If after reflecting over the above questions you find that you will require additional supports in the workplace, and that disclosing will help your job objectives, you will then need to decide on an appropriate time to disclose. If you decide that disclosing is the best way for you, it’s fundamental that you adopt a positive attitude. Promote the skills you have developed to overcome and difficulties you may have encountered during your life. Solving problems reflects strength of character, flexibility, creativity and maturity – these are valued skills for any employer. Talk with assurance; be positive and honest.
Always focus on your abilities and competencies – be enthusiastic when describing your skills, abilities, ideas and experience. Be brief when talking about your disability; don’t dwell on potential problem areas, or on details that don’t influence your ability to do the job. Remember that what is important is how well you will do in the job. Try to provide this information, even if it is not directly asked for.

Provide solutions for potential difficulties that you can foresee. Take the initiative and discuss barriers you may experience and the accommodations required for you to perform the job. Show how these accommodations can be organized efficiently, and what you can do to pro-actively look for or identify funding sources for these accommodations. You should be informed beforehand about agencies that help with workplace modifications or with technical appliances.
