What is disclosure?

Disclosure is letting people know about your disability. During your job-searching journey this could mean informing a group of different people - career advisers, employment services, employment and recruitment schemes, interviewers, employers, work colleagues – about your disability. Deciding on the appropriate time to disclose a disability is a difficult and complex decision that can be determined by diverse factors, like the type of disability, the type of employment opportunity, your previous experience towards disclosure, the need for some type of accommodation either at the interview or at job offer or the need for work-place alterations or supports.

You should always bear in mind two fundamental things concerning disclosure:

  1. To disclose is totally up to you! It’s a PERSONAL decision of when, how and whether to do it.
  2. Always focus on your abilities, competencies and interests. Your disability is not the central issue of concern; indeed it may not even be relevant at all.

Disclosure is an issue that must be considered as a part of your overall job search strategy and must be done on a job-by-job basis. There is no definitive solution to disclosure – you are the only one who can decide to do it or not, because disclosure depends on the individual and the situation. Focus on your goal – getting a job. Ask at every step if disclosing your disability will help you reach your goal. If your disability doesn’t have any impact on your work performance or on a specific selection criterion, then you are not under any obligation to disclose.
