Step 6: Attitude

Active listening during the interview

An interview is not a monologue or a question-answer game. Ideally, a real dialogue should be put in place between you and your interviewer where you can both assess if your needs are being met.

Recruiters are aware that a recently graduated candidate won’t have extensive knowledge of the company or the sector. But they will pay particular attention to the interest you show in their company and the remarks you make in order to picture yourself in the position.

If your find some of the questions difficult don’t get aggressive. Express yourself without giving complex answers. Draw on choices you took in your life and the positive aspects of each experience. After the interview, write down the main remarks, difficult questions asked and the information that a firm communicated to you: this information can be useful for the next interview.

During the interview:

  1. You shouldn’t adopt passive attitude.
  2. Listen carefully to your interviewer and try to imagine yourself in their position: what are their expectations, worries, what are they looking for?
  3. Do not wait for the interviewer asks you if you have any questions.
  4. You should position yourself as a “person offering skills” rather than an “employment striving person”.
