Step 5: Strategy

Imagine yourself in the position

If you have been invited for an interview concerning a specific position:

  1. Study carefully the employment offer while underlining key-words and skills required by firm.
  2. List the reasons why you applied for the position.
  3. Consider your skills profile and those required for the position on offer.

If your skills do not fit the position exactly reassure yourself, the ideal candidate does not exist! Counteract any skill gaps by demonstrating adaptability and motivation.

For example: “Although I am not fully competent using this computer package but I am proficient in general computer technologies and I am confident that with some study/research I will be fully operational within two months". Never lie or invent skills, it is easily detected and you risk to loosing credibility.

If you have been contacted after you sent out an unsolicited application, the interview will be based on your letter of application and curriculum vitae.

  1. Try to identify firm’s needs while projecting yourself as a future employee.
  2. Identify skills you could bring to the company.
