Step 4: Communication

Prepare what you want to communicate during the interview

During the interview, your interviewer will have your CV in front of them and will be searching to learn more about your know-how, personality and motivations. Whatever the type of interview you will have, your answers must be clear, concrete and factual.

  1. Do not repeat word for word what is written in your CV. A CV is a guideline for your interview which documents your skills and strengths which you should elaborate on and avoid CV repetition.
  2. Every argument must be illustrated by facts relating to your own professional experience or interests.
  3. Try to vary examples given in order to show your versatility, adaptability and the advantages of your background.
  4. Use wide and precise vocabulary.
  5. Although one should try to relax in an interview situation always maintain a professional demeanour even when your interviewer is friendly.

During the interview, give examples of how you achieved tasks assigned to you in different situations. This will reassure your interviewer concerning your skills and your ability to manage your disability.

For example: It is not sufficient to say "as an assistant and I managed my boss’s diary", but rather “last year, I worked as the personal assistant of Mr X in Y firm. My tasks included secretarial duties and managing Mr X’s appointments diary. Mr X traveled frequently in Ireland, Portugal and Estonia where the firm had subsidiary companies. I organised his travel and accommodation and prepared the necessary documents for these meetings (3 trips per month). I was also able to set up a discount scheme for the company with the travel agency".
