Disclosing a disability on a CV

As the many CV’s are cast aside at this stage in the screening process you may wish to omit details about your disability from your CV. Mentioning your disability at this stage could unnecessarily and prematurely see you exiting the contest before you have had a chance to prove yourself.

When considering whether to disclose your disability on a CV it is important to ask yourself the question “What is this adding to my CV?". For related issues see the module on 'Disclosure'.

Disclosing a disability in a cover letter

If you want to disclose your disability that this stage of the recruitment process you may have the opportunity to do so in the cover letter in a way that presents your disability in a very positive way. You can highlight any skills you have developed as a result of your disability. In this way your disability enhances your overall application.

Disclosing a disability on the application form

Some application forms ask direct questions about disability, so you can give all the details that you feel are important at this point. You may feel that the life experience you have gained as a result of your disability, increase your ability to do the job. You may wish to include these in the section on the application form that asks about why you feel you are suitable for the job.

Disclosing a disability on medical questionnaires

You may be asked direct questions about disability and health on a medical questionnaire. Whether you will need to fill one out, and at what stage you do this, depends on the type of job. You will have to answer honestly. If your disability has any health implications, you will need to put this down on this form.
