Application forms

Why application forms?

Employers use application forms in order to elicit specific information in a standard format from which they can readily assess your suitability for the job. Do not be surprised if filling in an application form seems to take ages - it will, because you are being asked for very important information in a very concise way. This is the test!

Techniques for completing application forms

  • you must have your preparation done
  • photocopy the form and practice filling it out before you complete the original
  • read the instructions carefully
  • read all the questions on the form before you attempt to answer any of them
  • consider carefully which information to put in each box
  • in answering questions include evidence (where appropriate) from all aspects of your life - academic, voluntary/vacation work, extra-curricular activities, membership of clubs/societies, etc.
  • give concise answers including hard facts. Avoid wordy descriptions and vague statements
  • use simple words and keep sentences short
  • use a very positive style - avoid negative statements:
    • use action verbs to describe your achievements. "I organised, I managed, I devised, etc."
    • make short paragraphs and keep them well spaced.
    • do not be tempted to include a CV with your application form and write on the application form "See CV". Send a CV in with your application form if you feel it provides additional information (unless of course an employers states not to), you must still complete the application form in full
  • be objective - do not exaggerate nor understate the importance of the responsibilities you have had
  • if possible have a professional in a similar field to the one to which you are applying proof read your application
  • send a covering letter with your application form - unless the employer’s instructions tell you otherwise. A covering letter gives you that "extra" opportunity to "sell" yourself - it is your chance to capture the attention of the reader
  • always keep a copy of your application form for future reference
