General guidelines

  • Never write a CV in the first person (i.e. ‘I’, ‘me’ or ‘my’). CV's should always be written in the third person
  • don’t try to adjust the layout until you have finished the CV. Only then will you be able to decide on the most effective approach. Concentrate on getting the information down first, headed and neatly displayed, and when you’ve finished check it all – you will probably remember other items to insert
  • avoid long block paragraphs as they are not at all reader-friendly. When an employer will be ‘skimming’ the CV, you want their eye to pick out the salient points as it travels through the CV
  • never take things for granted. Explain everything in a clear and concise manner
